Whatever the circumstance, finding a quality plant-based protein source is not always easy. Many vegan supplements suffer from poor quality associated with younger companies. Grainy textures, inconsistent quality, and poor taste have driven some away from this “green” supplements.

However, there are a few to brands and products that stand out as top quality products. These have all been tested – by Yours Truly – over the course of 1 month (each). See below for our reviews:

Plantfusion Protein

Plantfusion is the epitome of an alternative protein with mass market appeal. The protein blend is scientifically engineered for optimal taste, consistency, and nutritional impact.

This protein has a unique blend, but it is based off of pea protein for the high BCAA profile and amino acid content. But that’s not all – it also contains sprouted amaranth, quinoa, and globe artichoke. It packs a protein punch of 21 grams per serving with only 4 carbs and 120 calories. This profile is a nice lean blend for building muscle while reducing fat.

The only knock against Plantfusion is the 390 mg of sodium which is a bit higher than we like to see. For most people this will not be an issue, but for those with low sodium diets or restrictions it might not be helpful. Our experience with Plantfusion was a pleasant one. After about a week of taking it, our overall energy levels noticeably improved. It wasn’t a tremendous spike, but still helpful. The 21 grams of protein is a nice bonus as some of the vegan options struggle to break 20 grams.

As marketed – it was more than just a protein powder, although it still is a good protein source. Mixability was great, without any clumps or texture issues. Even just mixing with water was fine.

Vega Sport Protein

Vega Sport is one of the more established names in vegan living, having already established a track record of quality over the years. Vega Sport protein fits the category of “higher end” protein. With 5200mg of BCAAs per serving and 5000mg of glutamine, Vega Sport is engineered to handle series workout regimens with optimal performance. The 26 grams of protein per serving and only 4.5 carbs was what initially grabs attention. This is among the industry leading vegan protein content

With no added sugar and a diverse protein blend, Vega is a solid vegan protein option. The concoction of a pea protein base, with sprouted brown rice, SaviSeed, and alfalfa protein is about as unique as they come. If you have been trying out different vegan protein supplements and not been pleased with the results, this blend is something different to try.

We liked Vega Sport in our trials of it. It is definitely a good supplement for serious fitness nerds and athletes looking for an equivalent source to whey. It was right where we expected in terms of performance. The only knocks we had against this protein were the slightly chalky taste and the higher the average cost per serving. However, the amino acid profile even better than many of the leading whey proteins and the BCAA and glutamine levels were extremely good value for the money. Sunwarrior Protein

Sunwarrior is another popular purveyor of plant based supplements. One of the added marketing points for Sunwarrior is that it is also a “raw” blend, meaning it is compatible with raw diets.This is a great all-around plant protein with something to like for everything. The blend is quite unique with a pea, cranberry, and hemp protein base. Sunwarrior features 19 grams of protein and only 2 grams of carbs and fat per serving.

While the protein content is a bit lower than some of the other supplements, it is right on par with other vegan supplements. With the low carbs and only 100 calories per serving, Sunwarrior is also a perfect component to a weight loss health program. The consistency is very mixable and highly digestible, which is great for those with sensitivities. Sunwarrior is another higher end protein blend that we were eager to try out.

More so than other vegan supplements, this “raw” blend provided a significant energy boost throughout the day. No doubt the mixture of pea protein, hemp protein, and “herbal tea extract” helped provide this boost. This is an all natural product with no artificial sweeteners, but it does have a strong “stevia taste”. It’s not good or bad, just different and will depend on personal preference. Sunwarrior didn’t pack quite the protein punch that we were looking for, but on the whole was a powerful nutritional supplement which left us feeling more energized and healthier in general.

Garden of Life Raw Protein

Garden of Life is one of the best vegan protein powder options with a strong record of popularity. As far as supplements go, it is closer to the “meal replacement” category than to a pure protein powder. Similar to Sunwarrior, this is a “raw” protein compatible with raw vegan diets.

With a base of sprouted brown rice protein, this is the ideal supplement if you have a preference for the taste/texture of rice based products. Rice protein is generally much more palatable and mixable than other protein blends. The full ingredient list reads like a health-nut’s dream: sprouted brown rice, amaranth, millet, quinoa, buckwheat, sunflower seed, garbanzo bean, lentil, chia seed, flax seed, pumkin seed, and seasame seed. This composition alone is a good reason to incorporate Garden of Life into your everyday diet.

We enjoyed Garden of Life its beneficial nutrient profile and the energy it provided even hours after taking it. It takes a bit longer to mix, but we had no major concerns with the consistency after blending it. We particularly liked it mixed with almond milk (unsweetened or sweetened).

With only 17 grams of protein per serving, Garden of Life might not be enough for some. We prefer it as a regular supplement in addition to a more protein heavy supplement. If you are looking for a complete plant based protein, Garden of Life packs a powerful punch with a diversified nutritional profile.

At the core of Life’s Basics is a diverse and unique protein blend featuring pea protein, hemp protein, rice protein and chia seed. This blend mixes the best of the major plant protein groups without getting fancy with strange new ingredients. The all natural vanilla flavor is subtle and provides a nice flavor that is both highly mixable and adaptable to various shakes and recipes. With 22 grams of protein per serving, this has one of the higher protein per serving ratios among plant based supplements.

This protein came highly recommended in our circle of friends, so we were anxious to try it out. The first thing we noticed was the mellow tast. If you are into different shakes and smoothies, this is a great low key supplement to add in. However, the low key appearance packs a powerful nutrient punch. The chia seeds add omega fatty acids which was a great overall benefit on top of the 22 grams of protein. The protein content, taste, and mixability are a good combination of selling points that both casual users and body builders alike can appreciate.

The only drawback is that we wish it came in a bigger canister, as it seems to be available in only one 18 ounce tub. Overall, this is one of the best vegan protein powder supplements that we tried.

Hi there,

I really like your site, but the Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest sidebar is really annoying. I can't make it go away, and it takes up so much of some pages that it makes reading content difficult. It's bad in Chrome, but in Firefox it's worse, extending all the way to the bottom of the page.
